Next, prune back the remaining canes to a height of about one-third to one-half of their original length. Make your cuts at a 45-degree angle, just above an outward-facing bud.

This will stimulate new growth and encourage the production of lateral branches, resulting in a bushier and more compact plant.

Don't forget to remove any spent flowers throughout the growing season to promote continuous blooming.

Pruning Panicle Hydrangeas

To prune panicle hydrangeas, start by removing any dead or damaged stems. This will not only improve the plant's appearance but also promote new growth.

Next, you can choose to selectively prune the plant to maintain its shape and size. This can be done by removing any crossing or rubbing branches, as well as any weak or crowded stems.

If you prefer a smaller plant, you can also prune the panicle hydrangea back to about one-third of its original size in early spring.

However, keep in mind that this will reduce the number of flowers for that season.
