Designing the Ultimate Backyard Oasis

The backyard makeover project in Waterloo, Ontario was centered around the clients' three main desires: a lush green space, a pool, and a shipping container. Samantha Kleinknecht, the designer, took on the challenge and created a stunning backyard oasis that fulfilled all these requirements.

The first step in the design process was to create a plan for the green space. Kleinknecht wanted to incorporate a variety of plants and trees to create a natural and serene environment. She carefully selected a mix of native plants and colorful flowers to add vibrancy and beauty to the space.

Next, the pool became the focal point of the backyard. Kleinknecht designed a sleek and modern pool that seamlessly integrated into the overall design. The pool not only provides a refreshing escape during hot summer days but also adds an element of luxury to the backyard.

Finally, the shipping container was transformed into a stunning pool cabana. Kleinknecht's creative vision turned the container into a functional and stylish space, perfect for lounging and entertaining. The cabana features comfortable seating, a bar area, and even a small kitchenette.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Design Choices

In addition to creating a beautiful backyard oasis, Kleinknecht also focused on incorporating eco-friendly and sustainable design choices. She wanted to minimize the environmental impact of the project and create a space that was in harmony with nature.

One of the eco-friendly design choices was the use of reclaimed materials. Kleinknecht sourced reclaimed wood and metal for various elements in the backyard, including the deck and the cabana. This not only gave the space a unique and rustic charm but also reduced the demand for new materials.

Another sustainable feature of the backyard is the use of rainwater harvesting. Kleinknecht installed a rainwater collection system connected to the pool to minimize water waste. This system collects rainwater and filters it, allowing it to be reused for the pool and watering the plants.

To further enhance the eco-friendliness of the space, Kleinknecht incorporated energy-efficient lighting and solar-powered features. LED lights were used throughout the backyard, reducing energy consumption, and solar panels were installed to power the pool's heating system.

By making these sustainable design choices, Kleinknecht not only created a beautiful backyard but also showed that it's possible to create a luxurious and functional space while being environmentally conscious.
